The famous flea market located in Suva, Fiji, is on Rodwell Road and is directly across the street from the bus stand. It was opened in 1995 and is the central main hub for local MSMEs. One can find numerous wooden and woven handicrafts such as baskets, hats, traditional dresses, etc. You can also get yourself cosmetics, shoes, clothes, textiles, etc. which are usually bought by the locals there. There are even specialized shops with talented shopkeepers who will guide you through if you’re interested in buying musical instruments. So it’s a must-visit place if you’re a musician or an artist.
Area: Municipal Car Park, Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji
Known for: Kava Bowls, Grass Skirts, Tapa (Fijian Cloth) and Lali (Fijian Drum)
There are about more than 175 shops in a straight, streamlined modern setting. It looks more like a mall rather than a bazaar as it was characterized earlier. The marketplace has been upgraded and improved now. A lot of shops have become more organized.
The items for local consumption is something which one should not ignore and in fact, if you spend a bit more time then you’ll find magnificent fabric which can be made into a number of items like a tablecloth or a table mat, carpet, etc. Apart from this, there are folks who will tailor new cloth for you as per your measurements with local fabric and can even make shoes for you. There are people who will even create customized shirts and pants with the fabric of your choice. The friendly faces and the polite welcoming attitude will set you for bliss.
Local Fijian cuisines are also easily available and let me tell you, they are inexpensive and has rich aroma and flavor. So if you’re in Suva and if you have been to the Suva Handicraft Centre then visiting the flea market is a must!
